Knitting brings us together.
I remember the first time I learned to knit. I was 8 or 9 years old and my great grandmother sat me down and taught me how to cast-on. I worked a few clunky rows of knit stitch and set it aside. In high school, infinity scarves were all the rage. I took up knitting again – making big, chunky, down-to-your-waist infinity scarves; You-can-barely-find-your-head-in-the-mountain-of-fiber infinity scarves.
My mom is a collector. After college my mom’s yarn collection caught up to me. I started seeing the connection between the colorful, textural fiber my mom brought back from her travels and the trendy sweaters and tops and blankets that looked fresh and contemporary and different from what I thought handmade items “should look like”. I borrowed some of my mom’s yarn and fell in love. From finding the perfect yarn with the thickness, stretch, smooth (or roughness) and vibrant color I wanted, to learning the techniques needed to make the item. I dove-in headfirst.
All fiber art begins with possibility. The possibility of creating and the opportunity to learn something along the way. Maybe it is a pattern, or a new fiber type, or a new stitch. We’re inspired by what could be and the knowledge that we have the power to create it. We may approach the creative process in different ways, some people prefer materials and a free form process (my mom), others meticulous planning and designing (my great-grandmother), while others use the fiber as the inspiration (me).
Knit del Amor was born out of a multi-generational, cross-cultural and cross-continental thread of inspiration to create and connect to our creativity by designing beautiful things using a stick of wood (needles) and some thread (yarn).
